There are some places that remain frozen in time. Despite the build up of super disney-fied shopping areas, chain restaurants, and Crate & Barrel additions, Pasadena’s Pie ‘n Burger remains untouched since 1963. There is no need to wonder what they serve here. Sure they have ham, roast beef, and a grilled tuna sandwich but everyone comes here for the burgers and of course a slice of pie. Pie ‘n Burger was even featured in Hamburger Guru George Motz’s book, Hamburger America. (Make sure to pick that up if you at all love burgers.)

Sit at the Formica counter top or at one of the limited 4 top tables along the wall, order up a double double burger with cheese (better than the In-N-Out version), skip the so-so fries and save room for a slice of berry, peach, apple or chocolate pie. The burgers come served with lettuce, pickles, and their homemade thousand island dressing. That same grill from 1963 probably adds a little flavor too. It’s greasy, simple and one of the best burgers north of the Arroyo Seco. Not to mention it’s just a few minute walk from the Gold Line stop at Filmore!

Side Note: If you do stop in, make sure to check out the Chronicle Wine Cellar (owned by the Pie ‘n Burger family) located in the parking lot right behind Pie-n-Burger. They have some great deals and unique wines. They were about to close for remodeling last time I was there, but will re-open soon.
