Liberty Grill, Winner of 2007 “Best New Restaurant” by L.A. Downtown News, opened with mixed reviews. Owned by Fred Eric of Fred 62, menu items featured Americana and old-fashioned comfort foods like meatloaf, short ribs and chicken fried steak.
I’ve been walking by Liberty Grill for weeks now, it’s been a case of “lights are on, but nobody’s home”. I’ve never seen anyone eating there, or anybody working there for that matter. But the lights were still on every night. Well, my questions have been answered, when just this week the windows have been covered with a sign stating “Closed for extreme makeover”. Word around the hood was that there were far too many cooks in the kitchen, so a business decision was made to close down and revamp the concept.
No news on what the transformation will be, hopefully something that will attract both local Downtown residents and satisfy the varied tastes of the Staples Center sports fan attendees.

Hey, I thought the Liberty Grill was owned by Phil Anschutz’s wife.

According to Gayot and Citysearch it’s a “venture of Chef Fred Eric”, but maybe it’s owned by Anschutz’s wife?

This is great! I always wondered the same, what’s going on in there? Well, I hope they make some good decisions and give us another independent dining option in South Park. Let’s hope for a great small bites/happy hour (READ: recession) menu as well

I’ve only eaten there once…it was for a private party…the food and service were great. I’ll be sure to try it again once it reopens.
