Dong Il Jang – Koreatown

Food, Koreatown

There are literally hundreds of choices for Korean BBQ in k-town. Some I would imagine are much better choices and may be more non-Korean friendly than others. There are the charcoal grills at Tahoe Galbi, the loud party all-you-can-eat atmosphere at Manna, the swanky ChoSun Galbee or the divey Soot Bull Jeep. But one of my favorite places is Dong Il Jang.

The service is on the friendlier side compared to other places, the food is pricey, but high quality and packed full of flavor. Not to mention they turn your leftovers into kimchee fried rice! That is, if you happen to leave any meat at the end of your meal.

Prices range from 19-28 for each plate. The servings are medium sized. We got the Roast Gui, boneless short ribs and brisket. The Roast Gui is a spicey pork, the specialty of the house. The beef was flavorful and tender. Like I mentioned earlier, we didn’t order enough to have any left overs, so the waitress couldn’t prepare any kimchee fried rice for us.

The decor is old school Korean with large leather booths. There is a back room, where you can sit on the floor and enjoy your grilled goodness. Just don’t forget to remove your shoes first!
