Once Tiger Lilly, then Mes Amis, and presto chango, now 1739 Public House. Located on Vermont in the trendy Los Feliz (Fah-leez) area, it’s an attempt at a traditional pub, but with the random artwork and cheesy water effects behind the bar it smells of a cheap and fast turnaround. Don’t get me wrong, they have plenty of beers on tap (40 in all), albiet a little flat and the CO2 needs a little tweaking, but the menu consists of primarily gastro pubish food. The somewhat hit-or-miss selection of food included chicken wings, sheppard pie (with olives?), fish and chips, grilled shrimp, mac in cheese, salads, pizzas and pasta. The food ranges in the price of $9-14, beers around $6. The food wasn’t all that bad, but it didn’t stand out either. With the flat screen TVs behind the bar playing the game, it’s a decent concept for that area of Los Feliz, which was lacking a good place for watching a game while throwing back some beer.

The main dining room off the bar, has what looks like to be a wine bar in the back

40 beers on tap, lots of Belgian and German beers

No, I wasn't drinking Chimay, but my beer was suffering from an identity crisis, and the beer was a little flat

A full pound of wings, good flavor, but a little chewy

Fries were hot and crispy, the beer battered fish was flavorful, but there were more chips than fish
The menu needs some tweaking. It feels like they are trying focus on too many cuisines, it lacks focus, and flavor of the food reflects it. Hopefully with time, they will fine tune and tweak the menu (and the bubbles in the beer). Otherwise I can see this place following the footsteps of Mes Amis and Tiger Lilly.

i’ve lived in the ‘hood since 1997 and have now officially lost count on how many times that space has changed restaurants. me thinks the building must have some bad ghosts or energy there. maybe they need some space clearing…

Bad energy, yeah… The landlord is a thieving, tax-evading dirtbag. IRS agents take note.

“Los Fah-leez” makes you sound like a tourist. Just sayin.
