15 Days of Eating Lunch in Downtown LA

So I have Jury Duty for an anticipated 15 days. That’s about 90 hours, taking into account lunches and breaks, of arguments and deliberation. It’s my civil duty, but it’s my third summons in 5 years, and the second jury selection in that same span. Maybe I fit some sort of preferred juror profile. Or maybe it’s Karma, the city of LA taking back for so much that it gives me. Which is fine, it’s my duty, but it puts added stress on an already high workload at the nine to six J-O-B. I’ll be checking emails early in the AM, then again in the evening, trying to get caught up on the days work.

But the afternoons are mine for nourishment. The case I am on, while the judge says it will be interesting and exciting, I find it somewhat dull. But that’s all I can say, I am sworn to secrecy. The exciting part is I will get to eat lunch for 15 days in Downtown. Most of which I can meet the gf for, as her office is right down the street.

We live in Downtown now, but unfortunately a lot of eating choices close after the end of the workday. Which for Downtown is around 5 or 6. But now, I get to explore and nibble on places that wouldn’t usually be a choice for someone who lives Downtown. Hopefully, more establishments will see the value in staying open past the normal lunch hours for the Downtown Denizens like myself.

So stay tuned, in 15 days we’ll see how I fared as I work my way through 15 of Downtown’s lunch spots! Post your suggestions for stops in the comments.

around that area, there’s Pitfire Pizza. I think that’s the best pizza in downtown.

TiGeorges’ Chicken. That bay leaf, key lime infused cappuccino is delightful. It’s approx 3 miles from the courthouse

  3. Matt Mitchell Says:

TiGeorges Chicken is a good choice. But I’ll only have an hour for lunch, and no car. But I defiantly wanna check that place out soon.

Pitfire is a good choice, I’ll be hitting up Grand Central Market a couple of times too probably.

Don’t let distance deter you. If you time it right the DASH will get you alot of places quick.

And Pitfire Pizza is good, but I think Rocket Pizza is better. (Three blocks down on fourth.) 4th and Main area actually has quite a bit of choices, with Blossom (Vietnamese), Pete’s, and about one block further you have the Nickel Diner (which I’ve found to be hit and miss).

Daikokuya in little tokyo for some noodles of course. And fugetsu-do for some yummy pastries.

There’s a place on 6th between Broadway and Hill called the Sultan, which doesn’t look like much, but has great food. SANDWICH SHOP (yes that’s the name) at 6th and Grand makes some delicious sandwiches.

You can also have something yummy at the Farmer’s Market in Pershing Square on Wednesdays.

little tokyo is a good idea. not too bad of a walk, but you can’t dilly dally.

on thursdays, city hall has a farmers market right across the street from the courthouse. great selections, music, and you don’t have to go far.

sushi gen in little tokyo for sashimi special

  8. Fred Camino Says:

Hop on a southbound bus on Hill or Grand and hit up Colori Kitchen at 8th/Olive.

I second aldo’s suggestion for Sandwich Shop, the Gogi Hoagie in particular.

  9. Justin Says:

I did jury duty a few years ago for 7 days and I just ate at Philippe every day. Maybe not the most exciting thing but I was certainly happy.

Grand Central Market! Here are my suggestions there:

The absolute MUST there is Tacos Tumbras a Tomas. Don’t get a burrito if you need to stay awake for the rest of the day. But the tacos at $2.50 a piece are amazing and they give you ridiculous amounts of meat (plus an extra tortilla so you can make two tacos if you’re so inclined). I like the carnitas.

The Chinese Food place (I can’t remember the name) that faces the entrance on Hill street is good. I like their Won Ton Soup.

Again…can’t remember the name but there is a place that sells pupusas that is outstanding. They are on the East side of the building, about in the middle of the market.

If you are able to make it as far as California Plaza (depending on how much lunch time you have) you definitely need to check out Mendocino Farms for sandwiches.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I hit up Mendocino yesterday and the Sandwich Shop today. Next is Grand Central Market and maybe Little Tokyo for noodles if I have time.

For something a little fancier, Kendall’s offers 25% off your bill for people with juror badges – it’s on Grand and first at the Music Center (I had jury duty in January and our judge – who was a dead ringer for Johnny Carson – told us about that secret).

Uncle John’s Ham and Egg’s on 8th and Olive. Spicy Chosun Pork Chops with scrambled eggs, rye toast and cheap (but delicious) lemonade from the 2 gallon container. Closes at 3pm but my favorite breakfast lunch place in DT and you are in and out for under $10. S
