Yeah, I get a little iritated by people when they are talking on their cell phones in the car. Even more so when you see them make an unsafe lane change, turn without a signal, drive to slow… you get my drift. I’ve even seen people smoke, talk on the cell, and drive with a knee. No shit.
Well as of July 1, 2007, a driver may use a cell phone only if they have a hands free device. Like a headset or speakerphone. The first offense is $70, and $175 for each additional. UPDATE: After looking into it further, it seems as if AAA missstated the amount of the offense. It’s actually $20 for the first and $50 for each additional. Here’s the link. Personally. I think $70 and $175 are much better amounts.
23 countries including England, Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, Israel and Japan. New York was the first state to enact such a law. For a complete list, check here.

Just a minor correction – the cel phone law doesn’t go into effect until 2008, even though its listed alongside other laws that when into effect last Monday.
