Downtown with Huell Howser

Tue, Nov 14, 2006

City Beat

If you haven’t had a chance yet, check out Heull Howser’s new series, Downtown. In the show Heull is up to his usual quirky explorations of Downtown’s hidden gems. So far he has visited a wonderful French restaurant off an alley on 7th Street and also visits the newly restored Chop Suey Café in Little Tokyo.

He has also checked out the exploding art scene in downtown LA as he visits several galleries during the monthly downtown “art walk.” In upcoming episodes he visits the National Biscuit Company Factory Building and the newly opened Los Angeles State Historic Park.

The show airs on Fridays at 6pm on KCET. Not sure if it is rebroadcast at any other time. You can also subscribe to his California Gold podcast!

Hi There, I’m desperate to find the address and phone # to the French restaurant that Huell visited on his show. I have an out of town friend visiting Wednesday Nov. 29. I believe the name is the French Garden. I hope you can help me before the 29.

I am looking for the same French Restaurant!!! Is it on Sunset?

The French Garden is on 7th in Downtown. The French place on Sunset, which I think you are talking about, is called Stella Cafe, it’s really good. I went there for the first time and my friend and I really enjoyed it. I’ve never actually been to the French Garden so I can’t speak for it. The reviews on Yelp seem to be very luke warm for that place. I plan on writing a more expanded review of Stella once I can get back and bring my camera.

I drove to the French Garden one weekend. My husband and I finally found it but to tell you the truth we didn’t end up going in because the parking lot was empty (we were thinking about a very late lunch early supper). In any case the neighborhood was kind of scary and I am not a girl who scares easily. Maybe this place is better to visit during the week when the streets are more crowded, the neighborhood will make you think twice about driving over there.
