Welcome to this special Halloween edition of the Dig Weekend Guide. There is something for everyone this weekend. With live music, DJs, dancing, pumpkin patches, parades, haunted houses, art walks and tamale festivals. Just remember to give yourself some extra time, as traffic is usually pretty heavy on Halloween and make sure to watch out for the little kiddies.
Oct 31-Nov 2 - Los Angeles International Tamale Festival
MacArthur Park, Los Angeles (Fri 3-8pm, Sat 10am-9pm, Sun 11am-6pm)
Enjoy live music and lots and lots of yummy tamales as the LA Tamale Festival returns to MacArthur park. There will be a tamale cook-off, arts and crafts, a kids zone and free entertainment. Take the red or purple line to the MacArthur Park exit and save yourself the headache of traffic and parking. Admission is free, the tamales are not.
Oct 31 - West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval
West Hollywood (6-11pm)
It’s THE party of all Halloween Parties at the West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval. Join Comedienne and “Queen of the Carnaval” Chelsea Handler (star of the E! show Chelsea Lately) for which is sure to be one of the best Halloween celebrations in recent memory. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Halloween on a Friday night. Check out the web site for more info, street closures, parking info, etc. 250,000 people are expected to attend, so bring your patience, admission is free.
Oct 31 - Hollywood Halloween Street Fair
Hollywood Blvd (Dusk - 10pm-ish)
A more family friendly version of the West Hollywood street fair without the parade. There is no official event in Hollywood, but 100,000 people show up anyway. Costumed kids can trick-or-treat from shop to shop on Hollywood Blvd.
Oct 31 - Drop Dead Goregeous Halloween
Natural History Museum, Los Angeles (9pm-2am)
If you long for summer’s packed and delightful First Fridays at the Natural History Museum, then this is your Halloween. With marble halls filled with creepy animals to check out—plus some of your favorite bands and DJs. And the party is free to boot, but you must RSVP to metromix@danceright.net. Oct 31 - 2008 Halloween Bash @ Elevate Lounge LA
Downtown Los Angeles (8pm-2am)
Get out your slutty nurse/police/maid costumes and head to Elevate Lounge for Moshee’s Halloween Night Costume Bash. Advance ticket sales only for this downtown LA rooftop event, but get there early as doors close at 8:30 PM. Free sushi starting at 8pm, admission is $15 and tickets can be purchased here.
Nov 1 - Dia De Los Muertos Festival
Olvera Street (10am-9pm)
Dia De Los Muertos is one of Mexico’s traditional holidays reuniting and honoring beloved ancestors, family and friends. Activities at the festival include piñatas, face painting, Mariachi and Ballet Folklorico. Enjoy colorful, ancient Mexican ceremony in remembrance of departed loved ones, beautifully decorated altars, entertainment and a procession. Don’t forget to stop in a Mr. Churro for some of the best churros in town!
Nov 1 - Dia de los Muertos - Hollywood Forever Cemetery
Hollywood (10am-9pm)
Dia de los Muertos at Hollywood Forever is a must see event. Partake in various sacred ceremonial tributes and memorable altar creations with a vibrant traditional procession in the home of Hollywood’s Immortals. There is tons of food, 3 music stages, many themed parades around the cemetery, vendors of all kinds of Day of the Dead items and an altar contest, not to mention a lot of great costumes. Admission is only $5 and lines are guaranteed, so get there as early as you can.
Nov 1 & 2 - Brewery ArtWalk
Downtown Los Angeles (11am-6pm)
If Halloween isn’t your thing, but art is, then check out the Brewery ArtWalk. The ArtWalk is a twice annual open studio weekend at the worlds largest art colony. Each ArtWalk, over 100 resident artists participate. During this event, you will have the opportunity to see new works, discover new favorites, speak with the artists and purchase artworks directly from the artists at studio prices.
