Dig Weekend Guide – Aug 7-9

Welcome to the weekend. This Summer is flying by. If you blink, it may pass you right up. Get on out there and learn how to prepare an Asian cocktail party, drink beer and wine at LA’s only local winery, or enjoy any of the several BBQs and food cook-offs. Enjoy wine tasting in downtown for a good cause or check out the Rhone Rangers annual event in Santa Monica. There is absolutely no reason to be sober or hungry this weekend.

Friday, August 7

Asian Cocktail Party Cooking Class
Westlake Village (6:30pm)
Chef Robert Danhi, a James Beard Award-nominated author, is hosting an Asian Cocktail Party Cooking Class at the Let’s Get Cookin’ school. Aspiring professional chefs and ambitious home cooks will be instructed on the preparation of a diverse array of authentic Asian dishes. The chef will reveal his secrets for sweet coconut-mango martinis, zesty tamarind-kaffir lime-roasted peanuts with lemongrass, spiked Thai chicken satays, and Thai coffee crème brûlée bites. The cost is $75 per person; $140 for couples/cooking buddies.

Saturday, August 8

San Antonio Winery Wine and Brew Fest
Los Angeles (2-5pm)
Tour the San Antonio Winery grounds as you sip on wine and beer at various tasting stations. Drown in the warm sun with some of their wonderful central coast wines and beers from around the world. Enjoy tasty bites like Santa Maria BBQ tri-tip, tacos, sausages, and tamales. Admission is $50, call 323-330-8771 to get your tickets. More info here.

Korean Barbecue Cook-off
Los Angeles (12-8pm)
Top Korean barbecue restaurants fight for culinary supremacy at the Korean Barbecue Cook-off. Distinguished judges, including Times food editor Russ Parsons, LA Weekly food critic Jonathan Gold, “Good Food” host Evan Kleiman and Ernie Mack of the Los Angeles Fire Department, will be judging the food. Takes place at The Summit at 6th, 3223 6th St., L.A. Admission is free. Food available from $10 to $15.

Celebrity Food Show
Anaheim (10:30am-5:30pm)
On Saturday and Sunday Celebrity Chef Guy Fieri from Diners, Drive Ins and Dives hits the stage at the Celebrity Food Show. Taste gourmet foods, sample fine wines, and spend the weekend having a good time with family and friends. Tickets start at $35, buy them here.

11th Annual Winemakers’ Cookoff
Paso Robles (6-9pm)
Come out to the 11th Annual Winemakers’ Cookoff for a casual evening of wine a good eats, where you’ll meet 30 of the area’s finest winemaker-chefs. You’ll have a chance to taste the tempting fare grilled for your dining pleasure and enjoy wines selected to pair with their culinary creations. Tickets are $75 per person.

8th Annual Luau BBQ
Los Angeles (11am-5pm)
Come support the Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness at their 8th Annual Luau BBQ. Chow down on delicious Hawaiian food, drinks and enjoy Hawaiian dancers, a hula-hoop competition and more. Admission is only $15.

Corkbar & Downtown Women’s Center Wine Tasting Event
Downtown (5-8pm)
Corkbar is partnering with the Downtown Women’s Center to host a special charity wine and food event. Hors d’oeuvres include prosciutto-wrapped melon and baby artichoke hearts with Parmesan aioli. Admission includes four “taste tickets,” each good for a 1.5-ounce pour of wine from notable California vintners. Tickets are $35 per person and can be purchased online. A portion of the event’s ticket sales will be donated to the DWC to provide housing, food, and additional services to homeless women throughout downtown Los Angeles.

Sunday, August 9

The Rhone Rangers
Santa Monica (2-5pm)
The Rhone Rangers ride into LA for their annual trade & consumer tasting. Join them for an afternoon of tasting of over 150 Rhone Rangers wines, paired with antipasto appetizers by Food Fetish, at their newest venue, Pier 59 Studios West in Santa Monica. Tickets are $35 or VIP tickets for $65 which will get you in at noon instead.

palate food + wine Sunday Session and Supper
Glendale (12-5pm & 5-9pm)
This week at palate food + wine try the featured “Single Dish” at Sunday Session, grilled skirt steak with walnuts, blue cheese, and bitter greens with warm potato salad for $12. Sunday supper for $35 includes an appetizer (shelling bean salad, with lipstick peppers on olive toast), a main course (local seabass with shrimp, manila clams, fennel, saffron and nage or grilled skirt steak with walnuts, blue cheese, and bitter greens with warm potato salad), and dessert (baba rhum with roasted plums.) Wine flights available for $12.

Hollywood Outdoor Cinema
Los Angeles (7pm)
Screening this Saturday at Hollywood Outdoor Cinema, is Pretty in Pink. Get there early to secure a seat, bring a picnic and $10 per person. The Outdoor Cinema takes place in the old Circuit City parking lot at 4400 W Sunset Blvd.

Summer Pool Party at Yamashiro
Hollywood (2-5pm)
Lounge poolside with one of the best views in Hollywood on Sunday at Yamashiro’s Pagoda Bar. Enjoy muddled drinks, Asian inspired BBQ sliders for $3 and special guest DJs. Don’t forget your bathing suit.

August 13 – Summer cooking classes at The Larchmont Larder, taught by owner Michael Beglinger, celebrate seasonal ingredients. “Just Tomatoes” is set for On August 13 at 7 p.m., and will teach how to put heirloom tomatoes in soups, salads, tarts and sauces. Classes are $75 each. Reservations are required. 323-962-9900

August 14-16 – Bring the whole family to the the 48th Annual Sunland-Tujunga Watermelon Festival and enjoy the rides, the games, and the contests. Relax and watch the free entertainment from the pavilion or the Beer Garden, shop in the Festival Marketplace, eat in the Festival Food Court, cool off with the free watermelon, and enter the seed spitting and watermelon eating contest. Admission is only a dollar.

August 22 – Check out what’s happening in the Eagle Rock culinary scene at the Taste of Eagle Rock. This
much anticipated event will bring together diverse restaurants and community based businesses in support of a local non-profit organization known as the Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness. The event is set to showcase local restaurants that will provide delicious samplings of selected menu items. Admission is $25.
