Dig Weekend Guide - Aug 21-24

Welcome to the weekend. You’ve made it. Start it early and be amazed by life size dinosaurs, or celebrate Culver City’s heritage, take a road trip up to Paso Robles, enjoy a tiki festival in Long Beach, bet on the ponies in Del Mar, check out live music in Silverlake, or crash a food expo and eat for cheap all weekend. Whatever you decide to do, if a co-worker asks what you did over the weekend, and you say nothing, don’t blame us.

Aug 20-24 Walking With Dinosaurs - Live (7pm Wed, Thu & Fri, 11am 3pm 7pm Sat, 1pm 5pm Sun)
Honda Center, Anaheim
You’ve seen it on Discovery Channel, now experience it live! At Walking With Dinosaurs - Live features 15 full size dinosaurs. With a 20 million dollar budget, the show depicts the dinosaurs entire 200 million year lifespan on earth. The stars of the show include the T-rex, Stegosaurus, and the Brachiosaurus at 36 feet tall and 56 feet long. Ticket prices start at $22.50 and go on up to $79. Tickets can be purchased here.

Aug 22, 23 & 24 - Fiesta La Ballona Days (6pm-9pm Fri, 9am-9pm Sat & Sun)
Veterans Memorial Park, Culver City
For 57 years, “Fiesta La Ballona Days” has been celebrating the region’s early settlers. Enjoy a beer and wine garden, food vendors, live music, dancing, carnival rides, vendor booths and a petting zoo. For more info and a listing of events check out their website. Admission is free.

Aug 23 - Paso Robles Olive Festival (11am-4pm)
Downtown Paso Robles City Park
If you’re looking to get out of town this weekend, check out the Olive Festival in Paso Robles. Olive oil tastings, great food, local wineries, olive cooking contest and more. Admission is free.

Aug 23-24 - 1st Annual Long Beach Ho’olaulea (10am-7pm Sat, 10am-4:30pm Sun)
Long Beach, Belmont Shore
Formally the Tiki Beach Festival, the Ho’olaulea festival in Belmont Shore, features everything Hawaiian and tiki. Including music, traditional fire & knife shows, tiki carving, canoe rides, traditional dancing and more. Admission is free.

Aug 23-24 - Sunset Junction Street Festival (10am-11pm Sat, 10am-10pm Sun)
Sunset Junction, Silverlake
Oh yeah, in case you haven’t heard, this weekend is the Sunset Junction Street Festival. Enjoy food vendors, stuff you never knew you didn’t need, and music by The Black Keys, Cold War Kids, Broken Social Scene, Stephanie Mills, plus a tribute to Issac Hays by legendary soul man Sam Moore. Tickets are cheap at $15 ($20 at the door). If you feel like dealing with parking, crowds and the weekend heat, tickets can be purchased online.

Aug 23, 24 & 25 - Western Foodservice And Hospitality Expo (10am-5pm Sat, 11am-5pm Sun, 11am-4pm Sun)
Convention Center, Downtown Los Angeles
Ok, so maybe you’re not in the food service or hospitality industry. But where else can you eat for 3 solid days on $50? There will be hundreds of food and kitchen supply booths offering free samples galore. Check out their interactive listing here, and sign up for tickets here.

Aug 24 - Pacific Classic Day at Del Mar Racetrack (2pm)
Del Mar
With a $2.3 million purse, it’s the biggest purse in the tracks history. Experience the beautiful race track that is Del Mar, enjoy a day of racing starting at 2pm, plus a free swanky button-up shirt with an embroidered Del Mar logo. Then at 7pm, whip it good with a free Devo concert with your paid admission. Minumum bets are as low as $2, so you can still have fun, without losing much. Del Mar is about 100 miles south. The drive down there is delightful with great views of the ocean and it makes a great day trip.
