Dig Weekend Guide - 4th of July Edition

There are certain rights that I feel are crucial to the survival of this country. The right to free speech, equality amongst all, the right to vote, the right to a fair trial, etc., etc. I also believe that the right to enjoy a good fireworks show is paramount to starting your summer off right. Whether that means heading to the sand and enjoying the fireworks display at any one of our local beaches, heading into town and checking out the Hollywood Bowl or the Rose Bowl, or having some friends over for a BBQ and some sparklers.

They are a rare thing around here, but there are a few cities in the county that allow fireworks. If you happen to be one of those lucky areas, TNT and Phantom fireworks provide lists on their websites of locations. I found a TNT location at the intersection of Centinela and La Cienega. I mean, if I were to live in a city that allowed it. But I don’t, so I didn’t get any.

If you’re worried about setting the hillside or your neighbors roof on fire check out any one of the numerous professional firework shows around town. Here is a list of legal firework displays too large to include here. Some of the more popular locations include the Hollywood Bowl, Hansen Dam, Rose Bowl, the Queen Mary at Long Beach, the LA Coliseum, and the Pomona Fairplex. Most are free, some have a minimal charge. Just plan on getting there early to snag a good seat.

For some live music, with no fireworks, check out the Summer of Music at the Redondo Beach Pier which starts July 4th and continues through the summer on every Thursday and Saturday. They kick it off with the surf rock band The Surfing Safaris from 5-8pm. Enjoy free music and have dinner at any one of the pier restaurants. Check out the web site for a full list of summer concerts.

For the brave souls who don’t mind hanging out with 18,000 people. Check out the Hollywood Bowl July 4th Fireworks Spectacular: A ball at the Bowl with the LA Dodgers and That’s All Folks, Warner Bros. “Bugs On Broadway” on the 5th. Tickets were still available as of Wednesday afternoon.

Now that the fireworks are over, what to do next? Head on over to Bigfoot Lodge for $5 RED Headed Slut shots, $5 WHITE Lion shots, $2 Pabst BLUE Ribbon pints and Special guest DJ Peyote Cody. Check out the Yacht Club at the Bar on Sunset Blvd. Boogie down in a patriotic fever all night with Zach, Tigra and extra special guest dj Josh Stone.

On Saturday July 5th from 12-2pm, take a trip “down South” at Summer in the Southland at the Four Seasons in Westlake Village. Enjoy a great outdoor event honoring two of the region’s uniquely American contributions - jazz and barbecue. The Danny Janklow Quartet performs jazz favorites in front of the cascading waterfall while Four Seasons chefs serve Southern-style ribs, chicken and other traditional favorites at an outdoor buffet. Adults are $40, kids are $20.

On Sunday play some Drag Queen Bingo at Hamburger Mary’s in West Hollywood. Join The Underwear Affair at 9pm to raise money for Uncover The Cure’s 10k run / 5k walk For Cancer Below the Waist. A $20 donation gets you with 10 bingo cards and the chance to win some great prizes.
