Christmas Tree Shopping

Christmas Tree Farms
Sure you could hit up an overpriced xmas tree lot, get a good deal at Home Depot, or head to Ikea for a cheap tree, but why not go chop your own tree down? There are a few tree farms around the area. Bennett’s Best Christmas Trees, Chamberlain Choose and Cut, and Nancy’s Ranch. For a full list of tree farms and other lots check out this site.

Ice Skating

Now through Jan 21 – Ice at Santa Monica
Santa Monica (Times vary)
Brush the dust off those ice skates (what you don’t have your own pair?) and check out Ice in Santa Monica. Shopping along the promenade with Holiday events till the New Year. The rink is located at 1324 Fifth Street and Arizona Avenue two blocks from the Promenade. Admission is $12 and includes skate rentals.

Now through Jan 21 – Downtown on Ice
Pershing Square, Downtown LA (Times vary)
Head on down to Pershing Square for a little ice-skating under the stars and sky scrapers. Skating sessions are in 1 hr increments and cost $6, plus $2 skate rental. Parking located underneath the square is $5 or take the subway to the Pershing Square stop.

Nov 26 – Jan 2 – Holiday Ice at LA Live
LA Live, Downtown LA (Times vary)
Ice skate amongst the LED flashing lights and trees at LA Live. 1 hr of skating is $13 and includes rentals. Kids can skate with Santa on certain nights. Click here for more info.

Now through Jan 6 – Joy to the Hills
Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills celebrates the holidays with the city’s first ever full-scale, public ice rink located in the Golden Triangle. Positioned in front of the iconic Beverly Hills City Hall building on Crescent Drive between North and South Santa Monica Boulevards, the ice skating rink (made of real ice) is open December 1, 2012 – January 6, 2013, providing entertainment throughout the season for visitors and locals alike.

Christmas Light Viewing

December 19-23 – Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade
The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade is the premier Christmas event not only for Orange County and Los Angeles but Southern California. With almost 100 years of history the Newport Harbor Christmas Boat Parade is viewed by over a million people each year. Newport Harbor comes alive with decorations. Homes, yachts, docks, whole landscapes are transformed into a magical holiday experience. Newport Bay begins its holiday decorations after Thanksgiving and by the first of December Newport Harbor is richly illuminated with thousands of lights and hundreds of themed estates. Marina Del Rey Holiday Boat Parade
The Marina Del Rey Holiday Boat parade will run between 5:55 P.M. and 8 P.M. on Saturday, December 8th. Traditional fireworks that annually note the beginning of the boat parade will be shot off the south jetty of the marina at 5:55 P.M. The parade boats will circle the Marina main channel several times. As in previous years, all the parade boats will be judged too.

Venice Canals Holiday Boat Parade
Save the date for the 30th anniversary celebration of the Venice Canals Holiday Boat Parade on December 16th. Start time is 4:30pm and will begin in the canals at Eastern & Sherman. Prizes will awarded for “Best-Decorated Boat” and “Best-Lit Boat”.

Christmas Tree Lane
Turn off your headlights and drive through three very long blocks of large trees sweeping over the street, highly decorated with colored lights from Dec 10 thru Jan 1. To get to Christmas Tree Lane take the 210 to Arroyo Blvd. Exit toward Windsor Avenue. Turn left onto N. Arroyo Blvd. N. Arroyo Blvd. becomes Windsor Ave. Turn right onto W. Woodbury Rd. Turn left onto Santa Rosa Ave, which is Christmas Tree Lane. While you are there check out the Balian House. Home to the famous ice cream manufacturer, this estate sits on 3.5 acres and is decorated with 10,000 colored lights and numerous holiday depictions.

Eating and Drinking

Ice Cream Pies from Sweet Rose Creamery
Brentwood’s Sweet Rose Creamery will be offering a selection of housemade ice cream pies this holiday season, including Egg Nog Ice Cream Pie, Cranberry Pistachio Ice Cream Pie, and Malted Chocolate and Hazelnut Praline Ice Cream Pie. Check out their web site for a full selection.

Christmas Eve at Caulfield’s Bar and Dining Room

The LACMA centered restaurant Ray’s & Stark Bar prix fixe XMAS eve menu will feature items like Sunchoke Soup with Truffle Cream, Cotechino Sausage with Braised Greens, and Almond Spice Cake with Eggnog Ice Cream. On New Years, enjoy a dinner and cocktails featuring a DJ playing music all night in the outdoor patio with menu items like Market Oysters with Caviar and Smoked Jelly, Squid Ink Chittara Pasta with Serrano Chile, and Warm Quince Cake. Whole Roasted Sonoma Suckling Pig at Bestia

Just in time for the holidays, Chef Ori Menashe of Bestia will be offering a Whole Roasted Sonoma Suckling Pig. Priced at $28 per person, the Suckling Pig special will be served with roasted winter vegetables. Guests can also purchase a Whole Roasted Pig for $500 for holiday events, which serves 20-25 people. This holiday season Auntie Em’s Kitchen makes Christmas dinner as simple as a phone call. The pre-order home-cooked menu including vegetarian options and a la carte festive sides give patrons more time in front of the family and less over a hot stove. CAFE del REY is an iconic waterfront dining destination, is an ideal venue to enjoy the Marina del Rey Holiday Boat Parade – a vibrant and festive event featuring grand fireworks displays and “parading” boats-on December 8 starting at 6pm. From small skippers to lavish yachts ornately decorated in theme, the restaurant boasts panoramic seaside views, and Executive Chef Daniel Roberts’ Mediterranean-inspired cuisine and seasonal cocktails like a pumpkin pie martini and ginger & beer.

Public Kitchen & Bar
Executive Chef Tim Goodell’s Public Kitchen & Bar is the perfect location to view The Lighting Celebration commencing at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on Monday December 10. You’ve cooked enough. Let Jimmy Shaw and the team at Loteria Grill bring holiday yumminess to the table with some of their delectable Tamales. Choose from Pollo en Mole Pablano, Rajas con Queso Panela y Salsa Verde, Carnitas en Salsa Morita and Calabacitas con Elote (zucchini and roasted corn). Every year Disneyland becomes a Holiday fantasyland as both Disneyland and California Adventure are adorned with magical and awe inspiring holiday decorations. Knott’s Berry Farm Christmas

Not to be outdone by its more famous neighbor in nearby Anaheim, Knott’s Merry Farm is the annual holiday makeover at the Knott’s Berry Farm theme park in Buena Park, CA. The Peanuts gang appears in various incarnations throughout the park as part of A Charlie Brown Christmas. In addition to festive decorations, which include a 65′ tree and the park’s attractions decked in holiday lights, there are strolling carolers, special shows and ride transformations for the event.

Holiday Cheer, Santa and Snow at The Grove

At The Grove enjoy magical snowfall, The Grove Christmas Tree, Santa’s Cottage and more. Snowflakes float from above, nightly at 7pm and 8pm, enjoy a 100 foot tall, white fir with more than 15,000 lights and 10,000 festive ornaments, and visit Santa in his cottage (with pet photos every Tuesday).

This rockin New Years Eve party is quickly becoming a tradition at Tony’s Darts Away. The party features all you can drink beer from 8PM-2AM. Limited edition kegs and specialty brews will be tapped, including some very rare finds. Heavy passed appetizers and a buffet with dips and snacks is included, and attendees will also receive a special TDA NYE Glass. The Pub at Golden Road and Chloe’s

The Pub at Golden Road and Chloe’s are featuring a All-You-Can-Drink beer-palooza. For $35, attendees have access to Golden Road brews including Golden Road Hefeweizen, Point the Way IPA, Get Up Offa that Brown, Tumbledown Shack Barleywine, and Burning Bush IPA. The main room will also feature a DJ, and the full Pub Menu and Guest Taps will be available for purchase a la carte. Starting at 10PM, late night happy hour kicks in, with $4 food items and specials. City Tavern will be ringing in the new year with all-you-can-drink craft brews. They’ll start serving dinner at 4:30 PM until 9 PM (reservations suggested). Followed by an all-you-can-drink beer garden at 10 PM with 22 draft beers, selected beer bottles, wine and Champagne. Party favors, DJ, midnight champagne toasts are all included. Tickets are $58 with dinner tickets, $68 without dinner. Come back on New Year’s Day for their hang-over cure brunch starting at 10:30 AM. Our favorite west side wine bar (and burger) Rustic Canyon is doing a small plates sharing menu, with guests’ choice of 8 dishes from the market-driven holiday menu for just $85. Dance the night away at Terranea’s New Year’s Eve Club Celebration. Terranea’s upscale dance club and lounge will host the largest New Year’s Eve party in the South Bay. General admission tickets include entrance to the event featuring live performances by DJ Dominic Carter, Zen Arts performances by Dream World Cirque, an open bar, Hors d’oeuvres and a late night buffet. Get your tickets before Dec 15th and it’s $175 a person, or the price goes up to $195.

Located in the heart of West Hollywood, Tortilla Republic’s contemporary design and gourmet Mexican cuisine is the perfect place to have the first meal of 2013. Caulfield’s Bar and Dining Room

On New Year’s Day, Caulfield’s Bar and Dining Room will launch its weekly weekend brunch, which will continue every Saturday & Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Thompson Beverly Hills’ signature restaurant’s brunch menu offers highlights like Grilled Breakfast Pizzettes with Smithfield ham and fried eggs ($17); Breakfast Risotto with hazelnuts, eggs yolk, and wild mushrooms ($17); and the Superfood Breakfast with kale, mushrooms, and onion, all topped with eggs sunny side up, avocado, Sriracha, and a side of blackberries ($15). Specialty brunch cocktails, including The Palermo featuring Brandy & Benedictine, Crème de Violette, Aperol, finished with Sparkling Wine ($13), will also be available on the menu.

Delphine Eatery & Bar, located at the W Hollywood features classic California bistro-inspired fare in a relaxed and comfortable setting. Priced affordably between $9-24 the menu features classic dishes such as Eggs Benedict ($13) or Brioche French Toast ($12) as well as inspired options that include Cinnamon Ricotta Pancakes with sautéed bananas ($13) or Scrambled Eggs in Puff Pastry with asparagus and wild mushrooms ($13). Complementing the fare are daytime drinking options sure to cure any hangover such as Bellini ($8) or Greyhound ($8), as well as a selection of coffee and teas.

Ray’s & Stark Bar, located in the BP Grand Entrance of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, is offering a “Hangover Menu” to help you enjoy the first day of the New Year. Highlights from Executive Chef Kris Morningstar’s Hangover Menu include The Hangover Helper featuring smoked herring, crisped garlic, capers, pickled red onion with country bread and house sriracha ($16); Pork Belly & Grits with Anson Mills grits, sunny egg, maple dashi, and charred green onions ($20) and Truffled Egg featuring slow cooked egg, Benton’s ham, crispy potatoes, potato espuma with burgundy truffles ($18). Patrons can even continue the party with Stark Bar’s new winter cocktails.
