When Fukuburger first arrived in Los Angeles via Las Vegas, we rushed to the food truck turned restaurant. But, we were indifferent toward their overly sweet teriyaki and wasabi infused burger creations. So when we first heard that LA was getting another Asian inspired burger transplant from Las Vegas, we were less than enthusiastic. But we had heard some good things about Lorin Watada’s Bachi Burger.
So on a recent trip to Vegas, we stopped in at the way-off-the-strip, strip mall burger joint. The interior of this Vegas location was simple. Almost non-designed, beyond the few Japanese knick knacks and wall hangings. As you may or may not have read, Bachi is headed to Los Angeles. But is it really all that? Yes, we believe it is.
The menu at Bachi is more than just “Asian burger joint”. Think of it more of a, we hate to say it, gastropub. Other Asian inspired dishes include house made Pickles, Chili Fried Chicken, Japanese Sausages, Oxtail Chili Cheese Fries, and steamed Bao Buns filled with pork belly and roasted duck. But of course it’s the burgers that will bring people to Bachi’s new Sawtelle location in West LA set to open this fall.
Their specialty BBQ burgers include creations like Kiki’s Burger with Angus Beef, Sautéed Shiitake, Enoki & Eryngii Mushrooms, Caramelized Bacon, Sweet Onion Marmalade, Gruyere Cheese, Garlic Chili Aioli. Of course there is a Banh-Mi style, Spicy Miso, and Kalbi Burger to round out the infused burger inspirations. It was Miyagi-san’s Grass Fed Wagyu Burger that had us declaring meat and bun heaven. Cooked to perfection medium rare, stacked high with Crispy Onions, Caramelized Bacon, Chili Mayo, Fried Egg, and Furikake, a mixture of dried seaweed flakes and sesame seeds. The burger was supported with a soft and slightly sweet roll that held the burger together well as the juices seeped from the meat.
