The ultimate 9 course Umami Burger tasting

umami-burger-mainSince 2009 Umami Burger has been at the forefront of the Los Angeles burger movement. Umami, known as the 5th taste, is a phrase coined by the Japanese. Loosely translating to “pleasant savory taste”, the burger chain started by Adam Fleischman, has since grown his Umami Burger empire into multiple restaurants in California, Las Vegas, New York and Chicago.

So it’s no surprise that these burger innovators have upped the meat and bun game with their ultimate 9 course tasting menu. This tasting is not for the faint of heart, or stomach, for that matter. But who could turn this down when Umami reached out to Dig Lounge for this new tasting menu?

We’re started off with a selection of delicious sides and savory dipping sauces, including sweet potato fries, regular thin fries (I guess they were out of their killer Cheesy Tots) and delicious malt liquor battered onion rings. Then we get ready to enjoy all 8 of their featured burgers. All of which we layout in their wonderful glory below. The menu, which is built to feed 4 people, could have comfortably accommodated one or two more additional friends. Either way come hungry. Without the beverage pairing the tasting menu is $95. With a beverage pairing for 4, it’s $175. The pairing menu is only available at the Wicker Park, Hollywood, Broadway & Williamsburg locations. Commence burger download.

Sweet potato and standard issue fries, malt liquor tempura onion rings. Paired with Real Sugar Mountain Dew.

Always a favorite, the truffle burger with housemade truffle fondue, truffle glaze, truffle salt and truffle aioli. Paired great with the roasted malt, chocolate and caramel tones of the Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout.

The Manly Burger, topped with bacon lardons, beer-cheddar fondue, smoked salt onion strings, umami ketchup and mustard. Paired with a maple bacon old fashioned. Bacon paired with bacon, yes.

This was one of the surprises. Loved the intense and refreshing flavors of this Ahi Tuna Burger with daikon sprouts, avocado, gingered carrots, wasabi flake and wasabi tarter. Paired with a Victory Golden Monkey Belgian style tripel.

This is the burger that got us hooked on Umami. The Hatch Burger with roasted hatch chiles, house Cali cheese, and roasted garlic aioli. Paired with a Blackberry Swizzle; Old Rittenhouse Rye, Benedictine, mint, fresh blackberries, lemon with a splash of Ginger Beer.

For a Turkey Burger, this was juicy and filled with herbaceous flavors. The Greenbird is a fresh ground turkey patty with crushed avocado, green cheese, butter lettuce, sprouts and green goddess dressing. Paired with the 2013 Laurenz Gruner Veitliner.

The Cali Burger is your basic burger with butter lettuce, roasted tomato, caramelized onions, house spread and house Cali cheese. Paired with a Spicy Mezcalrita; Lunazul Blanco Tequila, PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur, infused with cucumber & serrano pepper, fresh juices, and topped with Xicaru Mezcal & Cointreau foam.

The massive Throwback Burger might be a new favorite! Two 3.5oz seared beef patties, white cheddar cheese, miso mustard, Umami house ketchup, soy pickles and minced onions. Paired with a classic real sugar Pepsi.

Their namesake Umami Burger topped with a parmesan frico, shiitake mushroom, roasted tomato, caramelized onions, and Umami house ketchup. Paired with the 2013 Seghesio Zinfandel.
