Dig Weekend Guide – June 15-17

Welcome to the Weekend. Plenty of stuff to celebrate with the worlds best dads. Start it off right and taste world class Rhône wines at the Redd Collection, pair In-N-Out with Zin in Downtown LA, sip on wine and beer in the park or in the hills of the ‘Bu. On Saturday, soak up the art and sun along the Miracle Mile, pay tribute to Johnny Cash, or see a movie outdoors. Finish it off on Sunday with cocktails at Sadie, Cabernet in Silver Lake, or a yummy tasting of Sonoma wine and rillettes at DomaineLA. Dad deserves it.

Guigal La La Tasting @ Redd Collection

Stop in the tasting counter at Culver City’s best kept wine secret, the Redd Collection, for a sampling of the 100 point wines of Guigal La La. Get 2oz pours of the 1988 La Landonne, 1988 La Mouline, and 1985 La Turque. These vintage Rhône wines from Northern France can cost in the upwards of $1000 a bottle! Barnsdall Wine Tasting Fridays

Unwind and enjoy the beautiful Barnsdall Art Park as the sun is setting, from the gated gardens in the West Lawn of the historic Hollyhock House. Silverlake Wine will present four selections of boutique, small production, artisanal wines from around the globe. This week will feature DJ Dan Wilcox of KCRW and delicious food from Heirloom LA, Let’s Be Frank, Gastrobus and Coolhaus. Tickets are $25, or $5 for kids and designated drivers. More info here.

Malibu Family Wines
Malibu (Fri-Sun)
Live music is back at the Malibu Family Wines tasting room. Grab a picnic basket and a bottle of wine from their tasting counter and enjoy live music in the beautiful hills of Malibu. The music starts on Friday night from 7-9pm and continues through the weekend. Shows are free and are 21 and over only. LACMA Muse Artwalk
Miracle Mile (12-8pm)
LACMA’s annual ArtWalk invites art aficionados of all ages to a day and night filled with exciting programs. Hosted by Muse, LACMA’s membership group for young art enthusiasts, ArtWalk includes live music, dance performances, and interactive art projects at LACMA and in neighboring galleries and businesses along the Miracle Mile. Admission to LACMA, the Architecture+Design Museum, and the Craft and Folk Art Museum is free during ArtWalk, plus more than twenty galleries and businesses on Wilshire Boulevard and La Brea Avenue are participating.

Johnny Cash Tribute
Ventura
A Tribute to the Music of Johnny Cash returns for a fourth year to the Ventura County Fairgrounds in Ventura, CA. Headlining the festival is the “Queen of Rock,” Wanda Jackson, and is joined on stage by stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, Carlene Carter. Other bands include rock staples, Slim Jim Phantom and Tim Polecat, as well as Big River, and New Zealand-based all-girl Johnny Cash cover band, The Johnnys. VIP ticket options offer early entrance, catered food & beverage, upgraded restrooms, and a preferred viewing area. Street Food Cinema: Rocky Horror Picture Show

It’s time for Street Food Cinema, the swankiest summer fest featuring cool outdoor movies, tasty food trucks and live music in Los Angeles! Bring a blanket, the family, the dog, and a picnic. Eat|See|Hear Presents: The Goonies
San Pedro (5:30pm)
Eat|See|Hear moves it’s outdoor cinema event to San Pedro this weekend. Complete with live music and food trucks. Doors open at 5:30, with live music by King Washington at 7pm, then the movie starts at 8:30 sharp. Tickets are $10 and are available online.

Father’s Day tasting at DomaineLA
Los Angeles (2-5pm)
Celebrate the parental men of the world at DomaineLA with some fantastic (and fantastically balanced) California wine and pork rillettes from Salt’s Cure. Susan LaRossa from Wind Gap winery in Sonoma will be on hand pouring 5 wines. Plus the guys from Salty’s will be on hand serving up quiche and a selection of rillettes. The food AND tasting are just $12. No reservations required.

Art Beyond the Glass
Hollywood (3-8pm)
LA’s top bartenders will showcase their artistry at Art Beyond the Glass, a special event where everything from the cocktails to the art hanging on the walls and the music coming out of the speakers will be created or performed by bartenders. Participating bartenders include Marcos Tello, Julian Cox, Steve Livigni, and tons more. Art Beyond the Glass will take place at Sadie Kitchen & Lounge, a stunning, 7,300 square-foot venue that mixes Golden Age Hollywood glamor and modern aesthetics. Bar bites will be provided by Sadie. Cabernet for Father’s Day

The L.A. Derby Dolls are Southern California’s premiere all-female, banked track roller derby league. Watch girls on wheels as they battle out on the track with two teams of five players each: four blockers (one of whom wears a striped helmet cover as the “pivot”) and one jammer. Wine Pairing Wednesday at Upstairs2
West LA (7:30 p.m.)
Upstairs 2, located above the massive Wine House, offers a four-course dinner prepared by chef Todd Barrie every Wednesday, paired with four wines from around the world selected by sommelier Marilyn Snee. Each week will showcase a different wine region, and there will be a brief discussion of each wine and its pairing. The cost is only $55 per person. Make your rezzy here.

June 22 – Sample 60 wines from 20 Italian wineries at Maggianos’s Little Italy at The Grove. Vini d’Italia will feature wines from some of the best Italian winemakers from Allegrini wines of Valpolicella to the Prosecco’s of Zardetto. June 23 – The 3rd annual Summer Food Festival hosted by Chef Susan Feniger will take place at The Grove from 10am-6pm. Purchase tickets and enjoy samplings from restaurants at The Grove and Susan Feniger’s STREET all day long! Enjoy cooking demonstrations and a speaking panel of LA chefs. Events include a Chef Neal Fraser cooking demonstration, a speaking panel hosted by Susan Feniger, and lots more. More info here.

June 24 – The Vendys are a yearly street food cook-off that, since 2005, has determined the best street chef in NYC. The Second Annual LA street food showcase will be an intense cook-off between the best sidewalk chefs taking place at Pan Pacific Park, right next to the Grove. Until May 24th, they’ll be taking public nominations. Then 8 food vendors will battle it out for the ultimate in street food competition and take home the Vendy Cup. The winner will be chosen by a panel of judges, but the general public is invited to enjoy great street food, wine and beer. Early bird tickets available for $30 here.

July 7 – New York’s favorite outdoor market continues in Hollywood for a series of fun filled events one block East of the historic intersection of Hollywood Blvd. and Vine. The Hester Street Fair will be curating a collection of some of LA’s favorite artisans, craftsmen, collectors, food, brands, bloggers and music. The second event, Hollywood Night Market, will feature a market into the summer evening with over 120 vendors, exotic foods, eclectic shopping and local, homemade brews in the craft beer garden.

July 21 – The LA Street Food Fest Summer Tasting returns to Pasadena’s Rose Bowl for an all day street food tasting extravaganza. With more vendors than ever, they’ve again partnered with Test Kitchen again to bring you more world class, award winning Top Chefs and restaurants, plus access to the Rose Bowl’s pristine field for stretching out and soaking up the sun. Sample signature bites from a curated selection of more than 75 street food vendors from hot gourmet food trucks, old school carts and stands to celebrity chefs, and street inspired dishes from LA’s best restaurants. August 18 – The annual LA Craft Beer Crawl returns to DTLA. Enjoy well over 50 craft beers to sample across 7 different unique bars and restaurants all within walking distance in Downtown Los Angeles. The event is a collaboration between Cedd Moses of 213 Ventures Inc., and Hallie Beaune and Christine Perozzi also known as “The Beer Chicks.” The beer selection will be curated by The Beer Chicks, beer personalities and authors of The Naked Pint: The Unadulterated Guide to Craft Beer. August 26 – The Los Angeles Epicurean Festival brings together culinary specialties and extraordinary wines & spirits, under one roof in a fantastic historic LA venue. Attendees will be able to pair and compare, taste and take home their favorite selections. Live entertainment, mixology and food demonstrations will be offered by LA’s top chefs. Their oenologists will explain how to taste and recognize great wines, as well as a competition with top LA chefs! Discover over 500 boutique wines and spirits, cheeses, spices, coffee & teas, charcuterie, olive oils, mushrooms, organic chocolate, meat, fowl, fish, produce, and much more. There will be two delicious sessions: 3-6pm and 7-10pm to ignite your taste buds and arouse your love of wine. Tickets are $75.

September 1-3 – THE TASTE, Los Angeles Times’ annual celebration of the Southern California culinary scene, is a three-day gastronomic adventure being held at The Studios at Paramount. Reflecting The Times’ award-winning coverage of all things edible, the five events will highlight distinct aspects of food culture in Southern California. Each will feature unlimited food and drink tastings from more than 40 of the area’s top restaurants, along with a selection of cooking and mixology demonstrations, wine seminars and panel discussions.
