The Walter Manzke Burger

National Burger Day is May 28th, and to celebrate we’ll be featuring a burger every day of the week here on Dig Lounge. Hold on tight, it’s gonna be a gut busting week.

When we heard the buzz that Walter Manzke had created a burger for Le Saint Amour, we set our course promptly for the quaint french restaurant located in the buzzing downtown scene of Culver City. It had slipped under our food news radar, but Manzke had joined the team at Le Saint Amour last September, along with Chef John Butler, to help out with the menu. And then last week UD had touted the greatness of his magnificent French inspired meat and buns.

Because we’re not just all about burgers, and we can’t turn down trotter when it’s on the menu, we started with the pigs foot served over smokey lentils and topped with a crispy fried egg. We’ve had Chef Manzke’s trotter at Church & State, and this dish was very reminiscent of that. Salty and smokey flavors coming together perfectly. A sort of pigs foot cake, deep fried, sitting on a bed of perfectly cooked, smokey lentils.

But then the burger arrives. An impressive looking thing. Dry-aged beef, precisely cooked medium rare. It comes topped with arugula, gruyère, caramelized onions, a coarsely chopped relish, and what seemed to be an herbed butter. Juicy, meaty, rich, buttery, crispy textures all melding together in one mouth watering bite. It came with fries, but the star is this impressive burger. You’ll be licking your fingers clean as the juices run down your hands. Does Manzke ever do anything not worth eating? We haven’t found it yet. The fifteen dollar burger is available during lunch, or as the Plate Du Jour on Tuesday nights.
