Indulge Cafe – Mid City

Way back in the mid 90’s there was an unassuming burger joint on the corner of Fairfax and Pico called Mo’ Better Meatty Meat Burger. Originally called Meatty Meat Burger. Rumor has it, it was damaged during the ’91 LA riots and re-opened as Mo’ Better. Although I haven’t confirmed if this is true or not. The burgers at Mo Better were amazing. Their veggie burgers, were just as good, if not better than their cow counterpart. But in 1998 it was sold. Something changed and the new owners drove it into the ground. Then sometime in early 2000 it was shuttered.

But they are back and this burger loving town is all a flutter. Former owners of Mo Better have opened a new burger joint just down the street called Indulge Cafe. It has opened its doors to and for a good reason. Their burgers are heavenly.

Even Merrill Schindler’s infamous, self proclaimed, food snob has called them the finest burgers in LA. Their beef and turkey burgers are hand pattied. They are juicy, packed full of flavor and come topped with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, grilled onions, mayo, and mustard then placed between a perfectly proportioned hamburger bun. Their fries are thick cut, with the skin on and make a perfect accompaniment. It’s about $10 for a combo, so it’s not cheapest burger in town. But you expect to pay more when the burgers are given so much attention by the restaurants owners. The owners and employees where just as excited to have us there as we were to be eating there. A nice change of pace! I just wish they had a soda fountain instead of canned sodas.

Dine in their small dining area, or take it home (call ahead). But on busier nights be prepared to wait. This kind of hamburger love and attention doesn’t happen in a blink of a drive through.

Here’s a little insider tip; On the menu are 3oz and 5oz burgers. You can also ask for 7oz and 10oz burgers as well.

Has this place really been closed since 2000? I’ve driven by there as recently as a couple of years ago and it looked like it was open. Glad they’re back, but wish they kept the original name. Much more festive.
